This album started off a single song, "Cynthia", which was supposed to be the follow up to my 2020 EP, "If You Want Love". But as the plans for live shows were halted due to the lockdowns, what started off as a single quickly turned into 6 songs and then grew into a full length debut 10 song album. Counterspells was created with an organic process in mind, staying away from endless overdubs and keeping the earliest takes possible, in many cases the vocals are the first few takes. I wanted an album that rocked liked my 90s heroes but still felt live and loose the same way a Zeppelin does.
I brought these songs to Robinson Kuntz for his exceptional live drumming at the Hot Tea Studio in Napa, California. Rob's drumming skill and dedication allowed me to bring you exactly what I was hearing in my head. Then the songs were handed off to Beau Sorenson of Tiny Telephone in Oakland, California for mixing. Beau's dedication to mixing these songs went beyond the music. The final sound of Counterspells is owned to his advise and creativity. Lastly, the songs were mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road. Yes, the Abbey Road.
